Part of being a good leader means being able to listen to those you are leading. This is certainly true in the workplace, where good management is aware of the needs and concerns of their staff. At Labor Solutions, we always strive to maintain open communication with our workers and clients, and these are some of the strategies we employ for doing so.

Tips on Being a Good Listener

The Labor Solutions office is a busy place, but that doesn’t mean we don’t listen to each other and to our workers. We use the following methods to make sure we are hearing the important things our workers and clients have to say.

  • Active listening. Avoid being a passive listener – a listener who is physically present in the conversation but is mentally a million miles away. Focus on the speaker without being preoccupied by what you want to say next, and then periodically paraphrase what the speaker is saying to you to ensure that you understand correctly.
  • Critical listening. This type of listening is best for when there is a problem that needs to be solved. Critical listening is focused on identifying problems, asking questions, and clarifying any points that are unclear. For serious or complex issues, you may want to take notes to make sure you get all the details straight.
  • Avoid biased listening. Biased listening is when you listen with a closed mind. You already made your decision on the subject and you are just hearing the speaker out without really considering any of their points. This is generally not a good way to foster productive communication.
