By now, we’ve all heard the jokes about “Googling yourself.” But seriously, it’s a good idea to do so from time to time. At Labor Solutions, we often do a quick Google search on applicants just to see what comes up that could be seen by a potential employer so we don’t have any unpleasant surprises.
Do You Google?
Google is an amazing tool for finding information on any topic – and that includes YOU. So what would an employer, or the staff at Labor Solutions, find when we use Google to search for you? Let’s consider.
In most cases, the first results will include the individual’s social media profiles. This should include LinkedIn, so if you’re not on that one already, go ahead and get a profile started there. Take a look at your Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram presences. If your profiles are set to “public” privacy settings, then make absolutely sure that everything contained therein is suitable for a potential employer to view. If it’s not, then you should remove it or at least lock down your privacy settings.
Many people have created personal websites for various reasons. A portfolio site or similar can be a great way to showcase your professional capabilities in more detail than what would appear on your resume alone. A blog about a hobby or other interest is fine and can be very interesting, but you might want to steer clear of controversial or emotionally-charged material if you are attaching your name to it.
While we’re on the topic of names, don’t forget to Google all the names you have ever used. This includes maiden names, nicknames, and any other aliases you may have gone by over the years. Even if the employer isn’t privy to these personal names, it’s better to be aware of what might come up instead of being caught off guard by a more thorough investigator.
