A commercial driver license allows you to operate a cargo truck, tow vehicles, transport passengers, and transport specific materials. There are different classes of licenses, so make sure you know what kind of license you want. You will have to pass skills and knowledge tests and meet specific physical and legal requirements. You will need to come in prepared for the knowledge and skills tests. Usually the DMV is very busy, so you most likely will have to schedule an appointment to take the test. Be aware that you cannot take the test online; you must take it in person.

Bring to the Test

  • Proof of identity, such as an official pieces of mail with your address on it or your Social Security card
  • A valid driver license
  • Proof you’ve passed the medical and eye exam

What May Hinder You From Getting a CDL

  • Felony charges or any violent charges against you
  • A license with a record
  • A failed or lost medical exam
  • Multiple attempts to get a CDL in different states at one time

There are different classes to know about for a CDL as well. They include Class A, Class B, and Class C. Each has a specific purposes that allow drivers to do different things.

Driver License Classes

  • Class A allows you to drive tractor trailers.
  • Class B allows you to drive large vehicles like a bus
  • Class C allows you to drive vehicles transporting hazardous materials or vehicles that transport 16 or more people

As long as you pass the written test and pay the fees you, are able to take the driving test. You must be at least 18 years old; if you are under 21, you will be limited in intrastate driving.
