It’s an unfortunate reality that our appearances affect how people view us. This is especially true in regard to tattoos and piercings. At Labor Solutions, Inc., we want to help you get the job you want and succeed at it. So here are some ways that tattoos and piercings can affect your job success.
Getting the Job
Perhaps it shouldn’t matter, but visible tattoos during a job interview can keep you from getting a job. While the employer or the interviewer may not care about the tattoos, or even view them favorably, they have to consider their customers. Ultimately, if your tattoos might be a problem for their customer base, then they are a problem for you.
Nothing Above the Neck
It’s one thing to have a little ink occasionally peeking out from the end of your sleeve or a cute penguin on your ankle. This is something many people will overlook. However, even in 2019, tattoos on the neck and face still cause negative feelings in many people. In many industries, this will be excluded outright. Even in those where it is accepted, it can be a major limiting factor.
Ear Piercings
For many people, piercings are an even bigger problem than tattoos. Earrings are fairly well accepted. Even this, however, depends on the quantity, location, and type. More than 2 or 3 earrings can be a problem. Also, earrings beyond the earlobe or large piercings, known as “gauging” can be a problem in many industries.
Other Piercings
Piercings that aren’t visible shouldn’t cause any problems. However, visible piercings in places other than the ear may be a problem. In fact, many employers ban them completely. Even a simple stud in your nose can be an issue for some employers.
While tattoos and piercings are more mainstream than ever before, they still can be a limiting factor in getting a job and being successful.
