Be smart about what you post, follow and like; it all goes into the image you are creating for hiring managers.
Your online presence is a crucial part in getting the job you want. Believe it or not, you don’t have to go off the grid, you just have to learn a few ways to be careful to ensure the security of getting and keeping the job you want. At Labor Solutions, Inc., we want you to have every opportunity to get the job you’re wanting.
Take Responsibility
Think of it as pre-interview preparation. Policing your social media does not have to feel like you are losing any rights to express yourself or share with family and friends. Still it must be taken seriously to reach the goal of getting a job.
Things to Avoid
Job recruiters will look at your social media to see if you are a good fit for their company but also to see whether there are discrepancies between your online persona and what you typed on your cover letter. Things to avoid are profanity, risqué photos, grammar errors, and drug references and/or use.
Delete Inappropriate Content
Whether you leave your profiles visible to the public is up to you. If you feel the need to make it private, do so just in case. Many job recruiters may stumble upon an inactive Facebook or Twitter account containing inappropriate content that never got deactivated. Go through old accounts and delete any content that could jeopardize your chances of getting a job.
What Recruiters Are Really Looking At
When recruiters look at your Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, they are looking for not only pictures but also what you’ve tagged your friends in, comments, whom you follow and who follows you. As a general rule: When posting photos, if you wouldn’t want your boss to see it, don’t post it. People hiring look at who you follow to see if you follow anyone within the industry you’re working in. This is always a good thing to do to learn more and gain opportunities through networking. They also check who follows you to see what types of people you attract.
