Congratulations Class of 2024! You’ve reached an incredible milestone, and now it’s time to take your first big step into the job market. At Labor Solutions, we know this new journey can be overwhelming and challenging. We’re here to help you find the right job that aligns with your career goals and provide some tips to help you prepare for your job search.
Tailor Your Resume
Your resume is often the first impression with your potential employers, so make it count! Having your own personal branding can be helpful in your job search, but don’t let your branding overpower your resume. Make sure your resume is optimizing for AI filters and applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen resumes. You need to highlight your education, relevant skills, internships, and job history. And yes, you do need to adjust your resume and cover letter for each position you apply for. A little bit of extra work can go a long way. A well-crafted resume that combines your personal branding with strategic keywords used in the job description can set you apart from other candidates.
Utilize Your Personal Network
Networking is a powerful tool when looking for a job. Use your personal network like professors, alumni, friends, and family to let them know you’re looking for a job. Expand your personal network by attending industry events, career fairs, and young professional networking events in your area. You can also grow your personal network online by using LinkedIn and connecting with professionals in your field and joining relevant groups. Tapping into your personal network may help you open doors to opportunities that aren’t advertised in a traditional way.
Preparation Is Key
You’ve updated and personalized your resume, utilized your networks, and now you have an interview! Interviews can be stressful, but preparation can help you feel more confident going into the room. Make sure to research the company and role you’re applying for. Practice common interview questions and your responses. We recommend you always come to an interview with at least three questions to ask the interviewer about the company and the position. Also, remember to dress appropriately, arrive early, and follow up with a thank you email or note after your interview. Arriving at an interview well-prepared will show your future employer you are enthusiastic about the opportunity.
Stay Positive, Stay Persistent!
The job market can be a daunting place. Nobody likes rejection, but it unfortunately is a part of the process when applying for jobs. Shifting from a black and white mindset to a growth mindset can help you navigate the roller-coaster of looking for your first job out of college. Remember, each new opportunity to interview is a chance to grow and learn.
