Truck drivers are the backbone of our nation, transporting the goods we need from far and wide to make them accessible to us. Labor Solutions frequently hires CDL (or commercial driver license) drivers for our clients. If you’d like to join the ranks of these noble service providers, here’s what you need to know.

The Basics of Becoming a CDL Driver

Being a professional driver is a big responsibility, so if this is a career path you’re considering, these are some things you’ll need to know.

  • Training. Before you can become a certified CDL driver, you’ll need some training. There are a number of truck driver training programs available in the area, so you’ll need to enroll in one of those first. You need to be at least 18 years old to drive within your own state and 21 years old to do interstate driving.
  • Get your CDL license. After you’ve passed a training program, you’ll need to make an appointment at the motor vehicle agency to take a road skills test to get your license. Remember to take all necessary documents with you. There are three categories of CDL licenses: Class A, Class B, and Class C. They are differentiated by the weight a driver can tow.
  • Get ready for work! Once you have your CDL license, you’re ready to start looking for a job. Make sure you are in good shape physically, as many positions will require some amount of heavy lifting. If you have experience or credentials operating equipment like pallet jacks or forklifts, be sure to include that on your resume. Keep your driving record clean and be prepared to pass a background check and drug screening.
  • Sign up with Labor Solutions. When you’ve got all your ducks in a row, send your resume to Labor Solutions so we can start matching you up with driving opportunities!
